Laundry Patong
Coconut oil is everywhere in Phuket: massage oil, hair treatment, cooking, tanning oil, mosquito balm. It is also one of the trickiest stains, because it is invisible on dark fabric until it dries into a dull grey patch.
Why it behaves differently from other oils
Coconut oil melts at about 24 degrees, so in Phuket it is almost always liquid. It soaks straight into the fibres instead of sitting on the surface, and once it cools inside an air-conditioned room it solidifies again, trapped in the fabric. That is why a quick rinse never seems to work.
Step by step
- Blot, never rub. Press a paper towel on the mark to take up what has not soaked in yet.
- Draw the oil out. Cover the stain with cornflour, talcum powder or baking soda and leave it for 20 to 30 minutes. The powder pulls the oil out of the fibres. Brush it away.
- Add dish soap. Dish soap is made to break down fat. Apply a few drops directly, work it in gently with your fingers or a soft toothbrush, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water from the back of the fabric, so the oil is pushed out of the weave rather than through it.
- Wash as warm as the label allows. Warm water keeps the oil liquid so the detergent can carry it away. Cold water lets it set again.
If the mark is already dry
An old coconut oil stain usually needs two rounds. Soak the garment in warm water with a spoon of enzyme detergent for an hour, treat it again with dish soap, and wash it a second time. Patience beats scrubbing: aggressive brushing on a dry stain damages the fibres and leaves a shiny mark that never disappears.
Fabrics that need special care
- Silk and viscose: no dish soap, no hot water. Powder to absorb, then a professional clean.
- Linen: handles warm water well but marks easily if you rub. Work slowly.
- Sportswear and swimwear: synthetic fibres hold oil stubbornly. Treat within a day if you can.
Never dry a garment you are not sure about
Heat is what makes an oil stain permanent. Check the fabric while it is wet, in daylight, and repeat the treatment if you can still see a shadow. Only dry it once the mark is truly gone.
