Getting around Patong is the one thing that surprises most visitors. Distances are short, but transport is expensive compared with the rest of Thailand. Here is how the options compare.
Tuk-tuks and local taxis
The red and yellow tuk-tuks parked along the beach road are Patong’s traditional taxi service. They do not use meters: you agree the price before getting in, and the price is fixed by the local drivers rather than by distance. Even a very short hop inside Patong costs far more than a similar ride in Bangkok.
What they are good at: they are everywhere, they take you door to door at any hour, and you never wait. If you are four people going a short distance late at night, the difference in price shrinks.
Grab and other apps
Ride-hailing apps operate in Phuket. The price is shown before you book, you pay by card or cash, and you avoid negotiating in the heat. For longer trips — Patong to Phuket Town, to Kata, or to the airport — apps are usually noticeably cheaper.
Two things to know. First, availability changes: at peak hours or late at night the wait can be long, and prices rise with demand. Second, there are places in Patong where app drivers prefer not to pick up because of tension with local taxi drivers; you may be asked to walk a street or two, which is normal and worth doing.
Which one, when?
- Airport transfers: book in advance through an app, your hotel, or an airport counter. Do not improvise at 11 PM with luggage.
- Longer trips (Kata, Karon, Phuket Town, Big Buddha): an app, almost always.
- Short hops inside Patong, late at night, in a group: a tuk-tuk is simpler and barely more expensive per person.
- Rain: everything gets slower and pricier. Leave earlier.
What about scooters?
Renting a scooter is cheap and convenient, and it is also how a large share of tourist accidents happen in Phuket. If you rent one: wear the helmet, check that your travel insurance actually covers you, and remember that you legally need an international driving permit with a motorcycle category. The hills around Patong are steep and often wet.
A cheaper way to think about it
The real money-saver in Patong is not choosing the cheapest ride — it is making fewer trips. Group your errands, and use services that come to you. That is exactly why we collect and deliver laundry at your hotel reception instead of asking you to carry a bag across town in the heat.
