Patong has a reputation for nightlife, but during the day it is a very easy place to travel with children. Everything is close together, the beach is shallow at low tide, and the big attractions are a short drive away.
The beach, at the right time of day
Early morning is the best moment for young children: the sand is cool, the sea is calm and the beach is almost empty. From about 11 AM the sun becomes hard work. Look for the flags: green means safe, red means stay out of the water, and during the monsoon months the currents are genuinely dangerous.
Water parks
Phuket has large water parks within easy reach of Patong, including one in the Kathu area just over the hill, with separate zones for small children. Plan a full day, bring rash guards rather than relying on sun cream alone, and go early to avoid queues.
Jungceylon and indoor time
The big shopping centre in the middle of Patong is the standard rainy-afternoon plan: air conditioning, a cinema, food courts and play areas. It is also the easiest place to buy anything you forgot to pack.
Mini golf and dinosaurs in Karon
A short drive south, Karon has a dinosaur-themed mini golf course that works very well for ages four to twelve. It is more fun in the late afternoon when the temperature drops.
Ziplines and jungle activities in Kathu
Kathu, the next district inland, has zipline parks in the forest with courses adapted to children, plus Kathu Waterfall for a short walk in the shade. Check minimum age and height limits before booking.
A boat trip, if the sea is calm
Day trips leave from the piers around Phuket to the nearby islands. With young children, choose a large boat rather than a speedboat, go in high season when the sea is flat, and confirm that life jackets in children’s sizes are available.
Practical advice from people who wash the aftermath
- Pack twice as many t-shirts as you think. Heat plus ice cream plus sand is a lot of laundry.
- Rash guards protect better than sun cream and save you the orange sunscreen stains on white clothes.
- Rinse swimwear in fresh water the moment you get back — salt and chlorine destroy elastic fast.
- Never leave damp beach clothes in a bag overnight; in this humidity they smell by morning.
Travelling with kids means a bag of washing every two days. Leave it at your hotel reception before 3:00 PM and we bring it back clean and folded the next day — book a pick-up on WhatsApp.
